Liffey Street Lower, Dublin, Ireland
When you’ve had a busy morning, a busy afternoon or a whole busy day shopping, you need to take the weight off your feet. Which is exactly what these two are doing. A bit of a sit down. At the feet of the woman on the left is an Arnott’s carrier bag. Cast in bronze. Arnott’s is a Dublin institution, the city’s largest department store, and its oldest, in business since 1843. This statue, which is called the Meeting Place, has been on Liffey Street Lower since 1988. And just like Arnott’s, it’s become something of a Dublin institution. So much so that no one calls it the Meeting Place anymore. They call it instead the Hags with the Bags.
