Let the Dance Begin

Lifford Road Roundabout, Strabane, Co. Tyrone, Northern Ireland

A great piece of music is a great piece of music. It can have you toe-tapping or singing along no matter where you come from or what you happen to believe. And so, it was an obvious choice of subject matter for this group of mega-statues in Strabane. The town sits on the border of Co Tyrone and Co Donegal, of Northern Ireland and the Republic. And where these mage-statues now stand was once the border checkpoint between these two countries. Let the Dance Begin is a tableau, five 18ft stainless steel figures playing instruments. On the Northern Irish side, a fiddler, and on the Republic side, a drummer. The music they’re playing is the music of reconciliation and partnership. The dance began at the start of the new millennium when these musicians appeared on the Strabane horizon. And long may it continue.

Maurice Harron, a sculptor from Derry, Northern Ireland, created these five steel musicians. As well as this fearsome warrior in the Curlew Mountains.
