Earl’s Island, Galway, Ireland
An inscription dedicates this statue to the people everywhere who are struggling for equality and to those suffering because of its absence. The figure of a woman is stepping out from a hard, blank wall of oppression and prejudice. She is breaking out from the stone she’s made of to become an individual. Equality is emerging. And that means the right to participate in society no matter your gender, ethnicity, age, disability, sexual orientation or religion. But this woman is not yet fully free of that hard, blank wall of oppression and prejudice. She’s still stuck in it. Because for all the advances made by society towards equality, fairness and acceptance there is still a lot to work towards. Equality is emerging. It has not yet fully emerged.
