Medieval soldiers at play

Medieval soldiers at play
La salle des veilleurs, Château Fort de Sedan, Sedan, France

It was a tough old job, guarding the Château Fort de Sedan. The tiny Principality of Sedan was under constant attack in the 1400s because of its strategic position, and because it gave asylum to France’s protestants. But at least these robust chaps were on hand to defend it. When they weren’t firing arrows from the battlements, beating off their enemies with longswords or lowering the portcullis as quickly as they could, Sedan’s medieval soldiers could be found playing dice in their chill-out room, the salle des veilleurs. Either that, or they’d be eating some sort of broth prepared by this angry-looking chef…
